School Transport Scheme

The Department of Education established the School Transport Scheme in 1967 to provide a safe transport service for school children who live long distances from school.

Bus Éireann administers the scheme nationally.

  1. Over 127,000 school children travel on our school bus services each school day: 67,000 post primary and 60,000 primary
  2. 6,000 bus routes are organised through a network of 11 local offices
  3. Over 3,800 vehicles are involved in this operation daily, using a combination of our own fleet and sub-contracted vehicles

A copy of the School Transport Driver Application form is available to download.

Collection points

Pupils are collected from convenient centrally designated pick-up points. All of the routes and locations used by the buses and schoolchildren on transport are assessed by our personnel to ensure that the network remains suitable and as safe as possible at all times.

Safety

The safety of schoolchildren, and the safe operation of our school transport services, is of paramount importance to Bus Éireann. All Bus Éireann school bus drivers have been provided with a means of communication for use in the event of emergency in the course of their duty.

Special needs

The School Transport Scheme offers equality of access to education. Over 8,000 children in the Scheme require specialised travel arrangements. They are transported on vehicles which, in some cases, have been specially designed or modified to provide easier access by lift or ramp and allow a number of children to travel in their wheelchairs. Adult escorts (have been appointed) on most of these dedicated services, to assist children with special needs.

Services for children with special needs mainly provide a door-to-door service from home to school. The number of vehicles utilised in this capacity, and the quality and range of such services, is increasing steadily and improving every year.
