What is 3D Secure?

3D Secure is a secure online payment system developed by Visa or MasterCard to protect your credit card against unauthorised use online. 3D Secure works by using a password that you create as your unique online identifier. You then use your 3D Secure Password to validate online transactions with participating online retailers.
3D Secure is only available for Visa and MasterCard accounts.

Do I need to ask for a new card before using 3D Secure?

No, you can use your existing card.

Do I need to pay for 3D Secure?

No, 3D Secure is a free service provided by Visa and MasterCard.

Can I use my current browser for 3D Secure?

Yes, 3D Secure can run on your current browser. Additional software is not required.

Will 3D Secure add time to my purchasing experience?

At the end of the purchase, 3D Secure will only take a few seconds to authenticate the payment details to ensure the card is only used by the authenticated owners.

I don't want to use  3D Secure, can I still buy tickets online?

Unfortunately not. If you don’t wish to register for 3D Secure you cannot pay online. You can pay by cash or credit card at TVM’s and in Bus Stations or pay by cash directly to the driver.

I have not used 3D Secure before, what should I expect to see?

After you enter your payment card details, you will be redirected to your card issuer bank’s 3D Secure registration page. After this registration, you should be able to complete your purchase.
Generally, there are two steps involved in registration: entering your card and personal details, and creating your password.
After your successful registration, you will be redirected to the Thank You page on buseireann.ie confirming your purchase completion.
For future purchases, you then can use your 3D Secure Password to validate online transactions on buseireann.ie.
Please note this registration page is owned by the card issuer bank, Buseireann.ie has no control over it.
Please never disclose this password to anyone and do not write your password down anywhere.

I can’t remember my 3D Secure password, what can I do?

At the 3D Secure screen, click "Forgot your password" or "Retrieve Password", and follow the instructions provided to set up a new password. You can also contact the issuer bank to help with your password. The 3D Secure password is saved only on your card issuer’s computer system, and is not retained by Bus Éireann, so we cannot help you retrieve forgotten 3D Secure passwords.

How can I find out more details about 3D Secure?

For further details on 3D Secure you should contact your issuing bank or the following websites:

I am experiencing difficulties with 3D Secure in Internet Explorer – What can I do?

By default, Internet Explorer can display the 3D Secure page properly. However, if you see 'Internet Explorer cannot display this webpage' at the 3D Secure authentication page, this may be because TLS 1.0 is disabled in your browser, though by default it is enabled.
If you are experiencing difficulties in Internet Explorer, please follow these instructions:
  • In Internet Explorer, click “Tools”, select “Internet options”, and then select the “Advanced” tab
  • Scroll down and ensure “Use TLS 1.0” is ticked, then click OK
  • Close the browser, reopen the browser and start from buseireann.ie again
    Use TLS 1.0

I am experiencing difficulties with 3D Secure in Chrome, Firefox or Opera, what can I do?

By default, these browsers can display the 3D Secure page properly. However, if you experience difficulties, this may be because TLS 1.0 is disabled, though by default it is enabled.
Please search for each browser’s help document to enable TLS 1.0, or uninstall and then re-install the latest version of the browser.

How do different cards behave?

  1. If your card issuer hasn’t implemented 3D Secure, your payment transaction will continue as normal;
  2. Master Card or MAESTRO Card users: If your bank has implemented 3D Secure but you have not registered for 3D Secure before, you may have three attempts to skip the 3D Secure process – on the fourth attempt you must complete the transaction through the 3D Secure process by registering a 3D Secure password;
  3. VISA Credit or Debit Card users: If your bank has implemented 3D Secure but you have not registered for 3D Secure, you must complete the transaction through the 3D Secure process by registering a 3D Secure password – this cannot be bypassed;
  4. If your card issuer has implemented 3D Secure and you have previously registered a 3D Secure password (on buseireann.ie or any other 3D Secure enabled website), you have to insert your 3D Secure password to complete the transaction. If you cannot remember your password, there is a password reset facility.
