Minister Ring launches improved Expressway Route 20/X20 Athlone-Dublin Airport-Dublin city service

  • Fastest non-stop service from Athlone direct to Dublin Airport and Dublin city
  • Route 20 will now operate services to/from Athlone Institute of  Technology
  • New choice of direct services from Moate, Horseleap, Kilbeggan, Tyrellspass, Rochfortbridge, Mitownpass, Kinnegad and Clonard to Dublin Airport

Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring TD today (Thursday, 15 May 2014) launched Bus Éireann’s improved Expressway Route 20/X20 service at Athlone Bus Station. Due to demand of the service, the company have increased the frequency of direct services to Dublin Airport, now serving even more towns in the Westmeath area.

The revised Expressway Route 20/X20 commercial service came into operation in April and with fares starting as low as €13 and only €17.50 return one way from Athlone to Dublin Airport this is the most cost effective way for customers to travel.

The enhanced Route 20/X20 will now provide 15 services a day in each direction with services starting from Athlone at 08.00 and departing Dublin Airport at 06.50. 

All Route 20/X20 services from Dublin-Athlone will start at Busáras (Dublin city centre) and travel via Dublin Airport. All Route 20/X20 services from Athlone will go to Dublin Airport first before heading to Dublin city (Busáras).

Speaking today the Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring TD said: “This revised Route 20/X20 service came into operation in late March and I am very pleased to hear that passenger numbers are increasing. This improved service provides a direct link for commuters between Athlone, Dublin Airport and Dublin city. With the exciting development of the Wild Atlantic Way, tourists can use this route and experience the rich and enchanting coastal touring routes that the West coast has to offer”.

Damien Coen, Services Manager, Athlone, Bus Éireann said: “The Route 20/X20 Expressway service is delivering a better travelling experience for the majority of our regular customers. The revised Route 20/X20 service will not only deliver a better travelling experience for our regular commuters but for the people of Athlone as it provides them with more convenient, frequent, quick and affordable routes to Dublin Airport and Dublin city”.

Bus Éireann’s existing Route X20 service offers customers a direct service from Athlone to Dublin Airport and Dublin city via the M6 motorway. Customers should note they can travel from Athlone to Dublin Airport in just 1 hour and 20 minutes.
All the new revised Expressway Route 20 services will now serve Dublin Airport. This gives our customers in Athlone a greater choice of services to choose from with services starting at 07.15 and finishing at 23.00

For the first time, on the Route 20/X20 the towns of Moate, Horseleep, Kilbeggan, Tyrellspass, Rochfortbridge and Milltownpass will now have a choice of frequent and direct services to and from Dublin Airport. The improved Expressway Route 20 will also operate a choice of services to and from AIT College Athlone, offering a wider selection of bus services for college students. 

From Athlone, the Route 20/X20 service will operate from Athlone Bus Station, Athlone IT, Moate, Horseleap, Kilbeggan, Tyrellspass, Rochfortbridge, Milltownpass, Kinnegad, Clonard, Moyvalley, Enfield, Maynooth, Lucan, Dublin Airport and Dublin city.

From Dublin city, the route goes direct to Dublin Airport and then goes to Lucan, Maynooth, Enfield, Moyvalley, Clonard, Kinnegad, Miltownpass, Rochfortbridge, Tyresllspass, Kilbeggan, Horseleap, Moate, Athlone IT and Athlone Bus Station.

The revised Expressway Route 20/X20 commercial service came into operation in late March and customers using the service are continuously increasing.

Customers using the Route 20/X20 service should note that all vehicles operating on this service are equipped with free Wi-Fi and the company’s most modern vehicles feature extra comfort seats and charging points at selected seats.

Customers can purchase tickets in advance on our website www.buseireann.ie, where they can receive a 5% discount or on the day of travel from our bus drivers.

The changes to Expressway Route 20/X20 have been approved by the National Transport Authority.
