Bus Éireann, Ireland’s national bus company, is organising a Fill-A-Bus appeal to aid those displaced by the war in Ukraine at the bus stop outside of Douglas Court Shopping Centre this Saturday, 5 March from 10am to 3pm. Bus Éireann drivers in Cork have been active in humanitarian causes for many years, with volunteer drivers delivering aid to orphanages in Belarus since 2015.

Members of the public in Cork are being asked to donate first aid kits, sleeping bags, toiletries and baby items (formula, nappies and dummies/soothers etc.) and non-perishable foods e.g. coffee, tea, pasta and tinned foods which will be distributed by volunteers to individuals and families in need near the Polish border in the coming weeks.

‘’Bus Éireann is delighted to play our part in responding to the humanitarian crisis on the Polish border as a result of individuals and families being displaced by the war in Ukraine,’’ said Aled Williams, Bus Éireann Senior Operations Manager, South. ‘’Bus Éireann is appealing to the public in Cork to bring first aid kits, sleeping bags, toiletries and baby formula, nappies and dummies/soothers for donation to the bus stop outside of Douglas Court Shopping Centre between 10am and 3pm this Saturday, 5 March where we hope to fill a bus in support of those most in need fleeing conflict in Ukraine.’’

Bus Éireann drivers Derry O’Shea and John Barry in Cork have been delivering shipments of aid to orphanages in Belarus since 2015. Each year they fundraise locally and drive trucks with donated goods over 5,000 kilometres from Cork to Belarus and back which are provided to local orphanages, schools and social centres for children impacted by the Chernobyl nuclear incident in 1986.

This year, in recognition of the humanitarian situation caused by the war in Ukraine, which has displaced many people to surrounding countries, drivers will deliver all donated goods to the Polish border later in March.
